There are common requirements for traveling with dogs within the EU. The same requirements apply to travel to the EU from certain third countries in close relationship with the EU. Please note that there are special requirements for traveling with dogs from Norway to Sweden. Norwegian dogs must have an ID marking and an EU passport. There is no  vaccination  in return for  rabies  or special documents required. Therefore, there is no lower age limit for when dogs born in Norway can be brought to Sweden.

The requirements apply when up to five dogs are traveling to Sweden with their owner or their representative. They also apply to animals that move to Sweden with their owner.

You, as the owner, buy an animal from Spain for your own company. You travel to Spain to complete the purchase and then immediately travel back to Sweden with your animal. In this case, the animals travel as a pet.

You, as the owner, buy an animal from Spain for your own company. The seller of the animal will meet you in Denmark to hand over the animal. You go to Denmark, complete the purchase and then return the animal to Sweden. In this case, the animal must meet the trade requirements.

You, as the owner, buy an animal from Spain for your own company. You and a friend from you travel to Spain to complete the purchase. You leave for Sweden earlier than your friend who later also takes the animal back to Sweden. In the event that the friend is traveling within five days of your own travel and has a pet owner's certificate and a copy of your travel or ticket, they will travel as a pet. If the pet does not travel with these documents or if the friends travel more than five days later than you, the animal must meet the trade conditions.

Requirements for bringing a dog, cat or ferret that is not for sale

You must start with the animal ID with a  ISO microchip . However, if your animal was tattooed before July 3, 2011, it does not need to be microchipped. If the animal is checked at the border and the ID number cannot be read, the animal may be rejected. The animal must have a valid rabies vaccination Primary vaccination.
The animal must have a valid rabies vaccination. The very first vaccination that builds up the defense is called a primary vaccination and consists of one or two shots. The animal must have identification and be at least 12 weeks old to receive its primary vaccination. The identification must be made before the rabies vaccine is administered for the vaccination to be valid. If the animal already has an identification, the identification must be read before the vaccine is administered. It must show in the pet passport that the identification or reading was done at the latest on the same day as the vaccination. The vaccination must be administered with an approved vaccine according to the requirements in  Annex III to Regulation (EU) No 576/2013 . Note that the vaccine administered must be approved in the country of origin and therefore may have different validity periods in different countries.

After the primary vaccination you must wait 21 days before you can travel with your animal.

Example: vaccination with one injection on January 1 = the animal may travel on January 22.
Example: vaccination with two shots on January 1 and February 1 = the animal is allowed to travel on February 22.

If you want to travel with your animal more than once, you will need to re-vaccinate your animal regularly. How often your animal needs to be revaccinated varies between the vaccine brand and how it is registered in different countries. When the animal is vaccinated, the vet fills in the data in the passport and notes the period of validity registered in the country where the vaccination is given. You must follow the revaccination intervals recorded in the passport, which means that you must have the animal revaccinated at the latest on the last validity stated in the passport. If the animal is vaccinated within the validity period, the waiting period of 21 days between vaccination and travel does not apply.

If an animal is revaccinated after the last validity date of the last rabies vaccination, the revaccination is equivalent to a primary vaccination. In this case, a new waiting period of 21 days applies before the animal is allowed to travel again.

The animal must have an EU pet passport
The animal must have an EU passport where the vet records all treatments.

Dogs must be reported to customs when crossing the border
Dogs must enter Sweden at a customs station, where you must notify a customs officer that you are bringing a pet.

The animal travels to the same destination within five days of the owner's journey
If you and your animal are traveling to the same place, but cannot travel together, you must book your animal's trip within five days before or after your own trip. The animal must be accompanied by the following three documents: EU passport with ID number and valid vaccination against rabies.
An owner's declaration with permission from you to your representative or to the transport company / its representative, who authorizes the transport of your animal (state name and ID number) without commercial purposes.
Copies of your own ticket or booking, to clarify when and where you are traveling to.
The animal travels more than five days before or after the owner or independently of the owner
If your animal has to travel more than five days before or after your trip or without you traveling, it must meet the requirements for trade animals.

Travel for shows, competitions or sporting events or training for such events
Are you traveling with more than five animals over the age of six months who are going to participate in a show, competition or sporting event or train for such an event? You must then bring:

The EU passports showing that the animals have an ID marking and have been vaccinated against rabies.
Written proof that the animals are registered to participate in the event or that they are registered in an organization that organizes such events.
Valid documents may exist​​ from the entry catalog of a show or event or a pedigree published by a dog or cat organization that organizes shows or competitions, provided the animal's ID number is stated.

More than five animals not traveling for shows, competitions or sporting events or training for such events
If you are traveling with more than five animals that are not participating in or training for a show, competition or sporting event, the animals must meet the requirements for trade animals. The same requirements apply to those animals in the group that are less than six months old.
